Ms Afshan Mantoo JP joined the Victorian University Council in 2006. Ms Mantoo was educated in both England and Australia, majoring in Education. She has been involved in extensive philanthropic and community work in Australia and Asia. A founder of the Australian Association for Human Rights, she worked to bring media and government attention to continuing global human rights abuses Ms Mantoo also pioneered the Islamic Women’s Welfare Service, a non-profit organization catering for the needs of women in crisis.

 

She also founded the Muslim Women’s Council of Victoria Inc., a community organization empowering Muslim women through education, recreation and interaction in the community. Since September 11, Ms Mantoo has been working extensively on community harmony and interfaith dialogue, also founding the Muslim Legal Services, a free service for those unable to afford legal representation.

 

After the devastating Kashmiri earthquake in 2005, Ms Mantoo coordinated a relief operation, bringing Australian Medical staff to help the wounded in the region. Ms Mantoo is now working on a self-sustaining orphanage project in Kashmir and a Peace Initiative in the Middle East. Her interests lie in the advancement of women and minorities and inter-faith and community harmony.
