Arts Project

‘Crooked Rib’ is an arts project produced by the City of Melbourne’s Cultural Development Program in Partnership with the MWCV. A creative collaboration between a group of young Muslim women and an experienced professional artist, ‘Crooked Rib’ explores mediums from street art to Islamic Calligraphy to photography in the protagonists’ attempts to define what it means to be young, Muslim and living in Melbourne. The project is funded by the Melbourne City Council.

Please visit the Crooked Rib’s blog at http://crooked-rib.blogspot.com/ to learn more about the group and their projects.

Soccer Project

Following numerous expressions of interest from young Muslim girls, the MWCV initiated a soccer project for secondary school aged Muslim girls of Ilim College (Broadmeadows). The team – MG United (Muslim Girls United) – trains weekly with a Muslim female soccer coach and PE teacher, and partakes in multicultural ‘Women’s All Nations’ tournaments four times a year. With the help of Lonely Planet’s generous funding, the MWCV has financed the coaching, uniforms and tournament costs of the team.

Walking Groups

The MWCV organises walking groups for women in the areas of Brunswick and St Albans in response to women’s expressed interest. The MWCV will soon initiate its Nordic Walking Groups – walking to fitness with the aid of famous Nordic walking poles.

The MWCV is currently conducting research on the availability of women-only sports & recreation opportunities around Melbourne. For your convenience, we will make our findings available as soon as possible, and continue to lobby and arrange more sports & recreational opportunities for women.
