The Muslim Legal Service of Victoria

The Muslim Legal Service Victoria (MLSV) established in 2006 provides legal consultation, services and advice to residents of Melbourne who may be financially disadvantaged. It has also been responsive to an identified need within the Muslim community to address issues of discrimination and vilification associated with various “anti-terror” campaigns and legislation. This is done in a manner which is culturally, religiously and linguistically appropriate to accommodate CALD community clients.

The service is offered on a pro-bono basis through referrals to lawyers who are prepared to operate on this basis. The MWCV has secured the services of a number of legal practitioners and the service is currently busy and in high demand. It is envisioned that a principal lawyer will be appointed in the near future (dependent on funding).

The MLSV provides special attention and care to issues relating to Domestic Violence, family law, anti-terrorism and workplace relations legislation and works closely with Victoria Police, Department of Justice, DIAC, Melbourne Magistrates’ Court and other relevant bodies to create a better understanding and effective relations with Muslim and CALD communities. It is an innovative, proactive and responsive service.
